According to the The Energy Saving Trust, the average home in the UK could save up to £130 per year by taking a few simple energy saving steps. Here’s our top five tips.

  • You can take control up a level with smart technology. Smart heating controls such as Google Nest or Hive are now more affordable and available on the high street and online. They let you control home heating from your smartphone, whether you’re at work, on the bus… or even on holiday, to stop wasting energy through unnecessary heating.
  • Close your curtains to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors.
  • Shave roughly £14 a year of your bills by turning off the lights when you’re not using them. Don’t leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily.
  • Save around 10% on your energy bill by turning down your main thermostat by 1 degree.
  • Get a smart meter fitted to monitor your energy use – it makes you think twice about flicking a switch!
